Updated Linux distributors including Caldera, SuSE and TurboLinux are expected to join forces tomorrow to unite on a common distribution. The news was scooped by eWeek's Peter Galli, under the headline Linux vendors gang up on Red Hat, which gets to the point pretty well.Coolness!

The Case for the Empire
STAR WARS RETURNS today with its fifth installment, "Attack of the Clones." There will be talk of the Force and the Dark Side and the epic morality of George Lucas's series. But the truth is that from the beginning, Lucas confused the good guys with the bad. The deep lesson of Star Wars is that the Empire is good.Whoa, this makes sense!

Chris Pirillo - C:\PIRILLO.EXE - Getting Screwed While Everyone Else Is Getting Laid
You have to admire Pennsylvania for running TV ads here in SF. This guy is sitting on his bed, looking over what appears to be an acceptance letter for a position at a tech company in the Bay Area, when suddenly, the "Job Fairy" appears in a rear-illuminated entryway. The overweight character in a tutu gives the young man a glimpse of what life would (most likely) be like out on the West Coast: cramped, dirty, and expensive. I don't want to say that he's right, but... he's partially right. Yes, there are opportunities out here, but the cost of living is out of this world. And the jobs? Just as sparse. Anyway, what I'm trying to say here is that Iowa should pay attention to this PA campaign. It's effective. If my career path was any different, I might have considered moving out East.Interestingly enough these ads are also running in North Florida.
News: New Web spyware eschews cookies
Researchers in Scotland are developing a new kind of Web monitoring software that they claim can collect enormous amounts of data on Web surfers while remaining nearly undetectable. The technology came to light when it was chosen as one of 40 technologies funded this year by the Scottish Enterprise, Scotland's economic development agency. The University of Strathclyde received the award for an undisclosed sum Thursday.OH HELL NO....DEATH TO SPYWARE!

Delicious irony has geek community in raptures Microsoft was found guilty of software piracy last year by a French court, according to facts unearthed today by the geek community. But the Redmond giant's conviction and three million franc (£285,000) fine somehow managed to escape the headlines. The Nando Times: LARRY MAGID: After the merger
(May 4, 2002 11:09 a.m. EDT) - Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina is about to face the most difficult challenge of her career. Sure, she managed to convince government regulators in the United States and Europe that the merger between HP and Compaq was not anti-competitive. And she narrowly succeeded in winning stockholder approval of the merger despite an organized no-vote movement, led by Walter Hewlett, son of co-founder Bill Hewlett. She even survived a court challenge by Hewlett, who claimed that she misled and, in some cases, pressured stockholders into voting her way.

Save Internet Radio! -- Encourage the U.S. Copyright Office to reject the CARP recommendations
Ok what's the deal with this, I understand royalties and everything...but most average people will not be able to afford the outrageously high royalties!
America's fledgling Internet radio industry could be effectively killed on May 21st if the Librarian of Congress (1) accepts the recommendations of its recent Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel ("CARP") concerning Internet radio royalty rates and (2) sets impossibly-complex recordkeeping requirements.

Can you believe this crap? A Cyborg Rat? RIIIIIGHT!
The age of the robotic rodent is upon us. A study has shown the movements of a live rat can be controlled by using a laptop computer, a radio and a set of microelectrodes implanted into the animal's brain. "Ratbot", as the creature has been named, could one day be used to rescue earthquake victims buried under rubble, seek out land mines or even, with the help of miniature video cameras, spy inside secret installations.
